I took a trip last weekend to Lekki conservation center with NFCS FUNAAB, and I decided to go on the canopy walk. I was actually scared and the first thing I told my guys was “I won’t be taking the walk because I am acrophobic but I don’t even know what possessed me and I change my mind. I went for the walk and for once in my entire life, I faced one of the many things I am scared of “height”. When I took the first stage of the walk, I asked if I can go back and the man told me I can’t go back. Guysssssss it wasn’t my best interest, I really thought I was going to die on the rope and guess what I didn’t, I survived a walk on a suspended rope as high as a 5-story building. I thought i had overcome acrophobia until I got to the tree house and I could not even near the stairs.
We all have one thing or the other we call our greatest fear, acrophobia is definitely not my greatest phobia (not even fear…lol). Sometimes, we just have to stand up and face that thing that scares us. Doing this gives us an atom of confidence and pushes us to see the worst and the best part of everything. We can’t keep on leaving in the shadow of our fears.
The first step to standing up to your fear is making the tough decision. It won’t be easy trust me; it will be hard but sometimes you just have to. Secondly, don’t ever think of looking back or going once you’ve started, once you stat doing that, you start losing morale and ginger to keep on going. Thirdly, surround yourself with people that won’t discourage or scare you, surround yourself with people you can trust, during the walk I was with IK shola and Ekene and these guys did a lot in helping me face acrophobia. They were giving me morale and telling me not to worry, even when I got so scared and tired, they still waited for me and still find a way of helping me. People you keep as company will determine a lot of progress you make as a person, so be careful out there. Finally, trust yourself and trust in God.
Not that I have overcome acrophobia but going for the walk was quite a big game changer for me. Up net is my phobia for water bodies and I am very sure that won’t be as easy as this was.
